Banned Books Week is an annual event that highlights the value of free and open access to information.
Libraries, bookstores, organizations, and communities across the U.S. will observe Banned Books Week Oct. 5-11. Visit Chapters to see our Banned Books Week display, which includes some of the country's most challenged titles, along with "Banned Books" t-shirts and sweatshirts.
In the 2024-2025 school year, PEN America recorded 6,870 instances of book bans affecting nearly 4,000 unique titles. The organization has documented nearly 16,000 book bans in public schools nationwide since 2021, a number not seen since the Red Scare McCarthy era of the 1950s.
